Before You Adopt

Similar to adopting a puppy, bringing a new piggy into your home may require some changes in your routine and lifestyle. Miniature pigs can make excellent and engaging pets for those who have taken the time to understand their needs and behavior, and have prepared themselves and their homes to accomodate their new family members!

What are Mini Pigs?

Technically speaking, miniature pigs are pigs that have been selectively bred over many decades to reduce their size and include any pig that weighs less than 150 pounds. The term encompasses many different breeds and types of pigs that can actually range in size from 30-150 pounds. The pigs that we raise on our farm are the smallest domestic pigs available and generally stay within 30-60 pounds and 10-14 inches tall. Breeders across the world are constantly striving to reduce the size even more, while still maintaining a healthy and robust animal. Mini pigs, like dogs and cats, are well suited to be household pets, so long as you are properly prepared.

Special Considerations for Mini Pigs

Because the laws are usually behind the times, mini pigs are still considered farm animals in many areas, even though they are now commonly kept as household pets. It is wise to check the zoning of your property (we can help you with that) before adopting. Some people choose to keep mini pigs regardless of zoning ordinances, but run the risk of having trouble with animal control. Mini pigs also tend to live much longer than some cats and dogs, reaching up to 20 years old. It is best to be committed to caring for your pig for the long term. If you do ever have to give up your pig, we can help you with that, and you should be committed to finding the piggy a wonderful and loving new home. It is NEVER recommended or advisable to give your pig up to the local animal shelter or rescue. Bringing it back to our farm is ALWAYS a better choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the answers to important questions that nearly every new mini pig owner wants to know! Be sure to give them a good read before you pick up your new piggy! Also feel free to text us any additional questions you may have at 951-977-3530.

What do mini pigs eat?

Mini Pigs do best on a pelleted diet specifically formulated for mini pigs. The amount fed should be carefully rationed in order to avoid obesity. The diet can also be supplemented with limited quantities of fruits and vegetables.

How big do mini pigs get?

There is a great deal of variation in mini pigs size across the country and size will vary from pig to pig. Our particular lines of mini pigs generally stay within the range of 10-14" tall and 30-60lbs. The pure Julianas are often on the smaller side of the range.

Can pigs be potty trained?

Absolutely! They are very easy to potty train and can use a litter box, puppy pads, or a doggy door. Piggies are normally potty trained within a few days of arriving at their new home! Contact us for exact instructions.

Do pigs walk on a leash?

Absolutely! A leash and harness provide an excellent way for you to take your piggy outside and keep her safe. Pigs can learn very quickly to walk on the leash and follow where you lead them!

How to house mini pigs?

Mini pigs can be kept indoors or out. In all cases, they need a secure area, shelter, 24/7 access to water, and daily feedings. Indoor pigs will need a place to potty (litter box or doggy door). Outdoor pigs will need clean bedding.

Can miniature pigs and dogs get along?

As with dogs & cats, this largely depends on the dog, its temperament, and its training. Dogs and pigs can get along, and often the pig will actually dominante the dog! However, dogs can also pose a danger to pigs. Carefully evaluate your dog before adopting a piggy.

What about mini pigs with cats and kids?

In our experience, pigs and cats can co-exist beautifully. This also goes for other small animals, like chickens and rabbits. A properly trained and handled pig can be a wonderful family pet for children!

What vaccinations do mini pigs need?

Most pig vaccinations are designed for high density hog breeding operations with specific health issues or in areas where certain diseases are prevalent. Recommendations may vary for your pig, depending on your area, so check with your vet. No vaccinations are recommended in our area.
